Golf practice routine

Golf Lessons Cork

Some say the winter time is a good time to work on your golf swing. Or is it? Perhaps it is, but, if you develop and keep a golf swing practice plan simple to the point. Ensuring to avoid over-complicating your golf swing and how to practice that swing. With this in mind, may I suggest the following approach to you:
1. Certainly, identify what your golf swing or practice goals are?
2. Be sure to keep your practice goals simple and avoid making too many technical changes. However, make changes that will make a difference. If you don’t know what will make a difference, please find and work with a golf coach that can make that difference.
3. Also, keep your golf practice routine simple, for example. “I am hitting too many golf shots off the heel of the club”. “I have worked with my local PGA golf pro/coach and we have agreed that my heel strikes are coming from a mix of my hands getting too far away from the body as the club hits the ball and sometimes my weight shifts to my towards my toes during my take away”.
4. Finally, (continuing the example from point 3) this plan was to improve his golf swing body movement, golf swing timing and, pre-shot routine and golf club aim.

A summary of this person’s practice plan

This is what we want to do.
  • 10 – 20 minutes practising hitting the ball with an opposite hand club (practice hitting the ball left hand for right handed golfers)
  • 5 x hip and full body rotation exercises after every 5 shots
  • After every 5 shots hit, change club and change target
  • Aim the club and set up correctly at every shot
The practice plan is for approx. 45 minutes to 1 hour, 3 times a week.
Turning exercises x 5 x 2 sets
Practice swings, feel what you want to do
Hit 5 shots to a target, go through your golf pre-shot routine before each shot
Change club, change target and repeat
In addition, after ever 20 shots hit, swap to hitting to the opposite hand club for 10 shots
Please do not hesitate to contact if you have any questions.

Practising Golf

Three 15-minutes practise sessions keeping practising fresh!

Practice session 1: Pre-shot routine 15 minutes

1 Pick the shot to play with the club
2 Use your “minds eye” to see a clear imagine of the flight of the golf shot you’re about to play
3 Internally feel and believe that you are in a very happy place
4 Make that practise swing that includes both the mental feeling and an excellent practice swing
5 Set up and  hit the shot to the target
6 Repart the process

Practice session 2: Aiming the club 15 minutes

1 Identify ball to target line and use poles or golf shafts as guides
2 Identify the leading edge of the club and align the leading edge perpendicular to that ball to target line
3 stand directly behind the ball and find a point/leaf/odd looking grass or etc, a foot or two in front of the ball to target line. Use that mark as you aiming guide
4 make a good practice swing, then set up and aim the club correctly
5 Hit the shot and repeat the process

Practice session 3: Rotation exercises

1 5 x Hip-turn exercises
2 5 x Full body-turn exercises
3 5 x Pause & hold for 3 seconds then turn and swing thought drill
4 5 x Speed stick swings right & left handed with the 3 weighted sticks
5 5 x Opposite handed practice swings
6 5 x Opposite handed golf shots

Practice session 4: Opposite Hand Hitting

Practice hitting the ball with an opposite hand club. So if you are right hand, may I suggest find a left handed 6 or 7 iron. Furthermore, start practising hitting opposite hand for al least one hour a week. To help with the opposite hand swing. Practise the turning exercises in the opposite movement and swing, swing and swing away.

Push ups for more Driving Distance!

Golf Distance Study – “Push Ups for Driving Distance”

Notably, most golfers that I coach are looking for extra distance off the tee and they ask similar questions such as, “how can I hit a longer tee shot? How can I improve my driving distance? Can you help me carry the ball further? I just want to hit further golf shots, can you help?”

Drive Golf is looking for volunteers again to take part in another distance study. The opposite side study worked very well this year so we are going to another study.

This year’s study will be ‘Push Ups for Distance’. Another nice, simple and fun study and this will be a 2-month study. Our study; will entail golfers doing 20 push ups 3 times a week for the 2 months.

The study will commence during the second week/third in December and finish in February.

We will measure swing speed and ball speed with driver and 6 iron at the start of the study, after 4 weeks and at the end of the study. The push-ups should take less than 5 minutes and can be done at home. If you can’t do a full push up yet, a modified push up will be prescribed.

If you’d would like to work on gaining extra yards and if you can spare 5 minutes 3 days a week? You would be most welcome to join this study. This study is open to all handicaps levels, both males and females also. Please join by sending an email contacting Pádraig Dooley as soon as possible at padraig@drivegolfperformance.com.

If you’ve any questions drop us an email too. For anyone taking part in the study, we will be offering free Mizuno balls.
